What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students begin with any given number from 1 through 20. They say each number one less in order as they count backward to 0.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can start at any named number from 1 through 20 and count backward to 0. The student keeps the numbers in order without restarting at 20.

Common Misconceptions

Students may count forward, skip numbers, or repeat a number. Teen numbers often cause trouble, especially when crossing from 10 to 9.

How to Assess It

Say, “Start at 16 and count backward by ones to 0.” Listen for the correct starting number, order, and transition from 10 to 9.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Lay number cards from 0 to 20 on the floor, then have students step backward from a called number while counting aloud.

  2. Ask, “What number comes before 13, and how do you know?” Students explain their thinking to a partner.

  3. Draw a starting-number card, then pass a beanbag around the circle as students say the countdown numbers in order.

  4. Practice a rocket launch countdown, starting at different numbers from 1 through 20 and ending with “Blast off!”
