Virginia SOL K.MG.2.f
The Standard
Construct plane figures (circles, triangles, squares, and rectangles) using a variety of materials (e.g., straws, sticks, pipe cleaners).
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will identify, describe, name, compare, and construct plane figures (circles, triangles, squares, and rectangles).

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use straws, sticks, string, or pipe cleaners to build circles, triangles, squares, and rectangles. They connect the pieces so each finished figure has the correct sides, corners, or curved edge.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose suitable materials and build each requested shape with connected sides or a closed curve. They can name the finished shape and explain how its parts match the shape name.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may leave gaps where sides should meet or use the wrong number of sides. They may also build a rectangle when asked for a square, or try to make a circle with rigid sticks.
How to Assess It
- Give each student pipe cleaners and ask, “Make a triangle and a circle. Point to the parts that make each shape correct.”

Ways to Teach It
Give students straws, craft sticks, string, and pipe cleaners to build each named shape on a mat.
Ask students to draw one shape they built and finish the sentence, “I know it is a ___ because ___.”
Play Shape Builder: call out a shape, and partners race to build it correctly before checking sides, corners, and openings.
Show pictures of windows, signs, clocks, and tiles, then have students copy each object’s shape with pipe cleaners or sticks.
