Virginia SOL 1.MG.2.f
The Standard
Compose larger plane figures by combining two or three simple plane figures (triangles, squares, and/or rectangles).
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will describe, sort, draw, and name plane figures (circles, triangles, squares, and rectangles), and compose larger plane figures by combining simple plane figures.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students fit two or three triangles, squares, or rectangles together to make one larger flat shape. They turn, slide, and rearrange pieces while keeping each piece recognizable.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can move and turn two or three pieces to create one connected flat shape. The student can name the pieces used and make a different figure with the same pieces.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may overlap pieces or leave them disconnected instead of making one larger shape. They may think turning a piece changes its shape or misname a rectangle as a square.
How to Assess It
- Give each student one square and two triangles. Ask them to make one connected figure, trace its outline, and label the three pieces used.

Ways to Teach It
Give students paper triangles, squares, and rectangles to arrange into one figure, then trace the outside edge.
Ask students to draw a figure made from three pieces and explain how the pieces fit together.
Play Shape Builder: reveal two or three shape cards, then have partners race to combine matching cutouts into one figure.
Study simple house pictures, then build a house from a rectangle, square, and triangle and name each part.
