What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students act out joining, separating, and combining two parts with up to 10 objects. They use the model to find and state the total or amount left.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose the right action for the story and use no more than 10 objects to show it. They count the final set accurately and explain what their objects represent.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add whenever they hear two numbers, even when objects are taken away. They may count the objects named in the story but miss the change or count the same object twice.
How to Assess It
- Give each student 8 counters and say, “Five birds are on a fence. Three more land. Show the story and tell how many birds there are.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs 10 counters and story cards; students act out each story, build the model, and say the answer.
Ask, “How do you know whether to put counters together or take some away?” Students explain using one story.
Play Spin and Solve: students spin numbers within 10, choose join or separate, then model and solve a matching story.
Set up a snack problem: place 6 crackers on a plate, remove 2, and have students model how many remain.
