Virginia SOL 4.CE.3.c
The Standard
Solve single-step contextual problems involving multiplication of a whole number, limited to 12 or less, and a unit fraction (e.g., 6 × 1 3 , 1 5 × 8, 2 × 1 10 ), with models.*
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will estimate, represent, solve, and justify solutions to single-step problems, including those in context, using addition and subtraction of fractions (proper, improper, and mixed numbers with like denominators of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, and 12), with and without models; and solve single-step contextual problems involving multiplication of a whole number (12 or less) and a unit fraction, with models.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find the total when a unit fraction is repeated a given number of times. They represent the situation with a model, write an equation, and label the answer.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students draw equal groups, fraction strips, or number line jumps that match the situation. They write the multiplication equation and give an accurate fraction or mixed-number answer with units.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may multiply the denominator by the whole number instead of counting copies of the unit fraction. They may also treat the product as a whole number or mislabel a model’s equal parts.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Each bottle holds 1/4 liter. How much do 7 bottles hold?” Require a labeled model, equation, and answer.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs fraction strips and have them model eight copies of 1/3, then record the total as a fraction and mixed number.
Ask students to explain why 6 × 1/4 means six copies of one fourth, using words and a labeled sketch.
Play a matching game with context cards, multiplication equations, fraction models, and product cards.
Use measuring cups to find how much water is needed when a recipe calls for 1/3 cup several times.
