Virginia SOL 5.CE.2.d

Math5th GradeComputation and Estimation

The Standard

Solve single-step contextual problems involving multiplication of a whole number, limited to 12 or less, and a proper fraction (e.g., 9 × 2 3 , 8 × 3 4 ), with models. The denominator will be a factor of the whole number and answers should be expressed in simplest form.*

Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will estimate, represent, solve, and justify solutions to single-step and multistep problems, including those in context, using addition and subtraction of fractions with like and unlike denominators (with and without models), and solve single-step contextual problems involving multiplication of a whole number and a proper fraction, with models.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students find the total when a whole-number number of equal groups each contains a proper fraction. They use a model, regroup fractional parts into wholes, and give the answer in simplest form.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can solve a one-step story and draw equal groups with fraction strips, a tape diagram, or a number line. The student regroups fractional parts into wholes, simplifies the answer, and labels it with the correct unit.

Common Misconceptions

Students may multiply both the numerator and denominator, writing 8 × 3/4 as 24/32. Some add 8 and 3/4 because they miss the meaning of “each.” Others stop at 24/4 instead of simplifying to 6.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Eight jars each hold 3/4 liter of juice. Draw a model, find the total amount, and write the answer in simplest form.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use fraction strips to build eight groups of 3/4, then trade every four fourths for one whole and record the product.

  2. Have students explain in writing why nine groups of 2/3 equal six, using a labeled tape diagram as evidence.

  3. Play a matching game with context cards, fraction models, and simplified products, including distractors that multiply both numerator and denominator.

  4. Plan snack bags containing 3/4 cup each, and use a drawing to find the oats needed for eight bags.
