Virginia SOL 8.PFA.5.b

Math8th GradePatterns, Functions, and Algebra

The Standard

Represent solutions to inequalities algebraically and graphically using a number line.

Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will write and solve multistep linear inequalities in one variable, including problems in context that require the solution of a multistep linear inequality in one variable.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students show solution sets with inequality symbols and number-line graphs. They use open or closed points and shade in the correct direction.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly match an inequality to a number-line graph and convert a graph back to inequality notation. They choose the correct endpoint and shading direction, including with negative boundary values.

Common Misconceptions

Students may use a closed point for < or >, or an open point for ≤ or ≥. They may shade in the wrong direction or misplace negative numbers on the number line.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: Graph x > -2, then write the inequality represented by a closed point at 4 shaded left.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Make a floor number line with tape, then have students place endpoint cards and stand on every value included in a given inequality.

  2. Ask students to explain why x < 5 uses an open point and x ≤ 5 uses a closed point.

  3. Play a matching game with cards showing inequalities, number-line graphs, and verbal descriptions of solution sets.

  4. Use a $40 spending limit, and have students write and graph the possible amounts they can spend.
