Virginia SOL 6.PFA.4.d

Math6th GradePatterns, Functions, and Algebra

The Standard

Use substitution or a number line graph to justify whether a given number in a specified set makes a linear inequality in one variable true.

Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will represent a contextual situation using a linear inequality in one variable with symbols and graphs on a number line.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students test a given value by substituting it into a one-variable linear inequality and checking whether the comparison is true. They can also use a number line graph to justify whether the value is included in the solution set.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students substitute the given value, simplify both sides, and state whether the resulting comparison is true. They can also use a correct number line graph to show whether the value belongs to the solution set.

Common Misconceptions

Students may reverse the inequality sign during substitution or treat it like an equals sign. They may also confuse open and closed circles or shade the wrong direction on a number line.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: From {-2, 0, 3, 5}, decide whether 3 makes 2x - 1 < 7 true. Justify with substitution or a number line graph.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place integer cards on a taped number line, then test each card in 2x + 1 ≤ 9 and sort solutions from non-solutions.

  2. Write which values from {0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5} satisfy 3x > 9, and explain using substitution.

  3. Play Inequality Match: pair value cards with true substitution statements or matching number line graphs, earning a point for each justification.

  4. Use a $30 budget and $6 ticket price to test which ticket counts satisfy 6t ≤ 30.
