The Standard

Given a linear inequality in one variable, create a corresponding contextual situation or create a number line graph.

Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will represent a contextual situation using a linear inequality in one variable with symbols and graphs on a number line.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students turn a one-variable inequality into a matching real-life situation or number line graph. They show whether the boundary is included and which values make the inequality true.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students write a believable situation that matches the variable, boundary value, direction, and inclusion of the boundary. They graph the inequality with the correct circle and shading.

Common Misconceptions

Students may reverse the inequality symbol or shade the wrong direction. They may use a closed circle for < or >, or an open circle for ≤ or ≥. Contexts may also leave out whether the boundary value is included.

How to Assess It

Give students x ≤ 7. Ask them to draw its number line graph and write a one-sentence situation it could represent.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Tape a number line on the floor, give students inequality cards, and have them place a circle marker and shade with yarn.

  2. Ask, “How are x < 12 and x ≤ 12 different?” Students explain using an age, height, or cost example.

  3. Play a matching game with sets of inequality cards, number line graphs, and situation cards, then have students justify each match.

  4. Use a $30 spending limit and item prices to model how much money a shopper can spend with an inequality and graph.
