What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students represent real situations with right triangles and find missing side lengths. They also test three given lengths to decide whether they form a right triangle.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose the correct side as the hypotenuse, set up an equation, and solve accurately. They use the converse to classify a triangle and explain their conclusion in context.

Common Misconceptions

Students may use a leg as c instead of identifying the side opposite the right angle. They may add side lengths instead of their squares. Some assume any three side lengths form a right triangle without checking whether a² + b² = c².

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “A 10-foot ladder stands 6 feet from a wall. How high does it reach, and do lengths 6, 8, and 11 form a right triangle?” Require equations, units, and a written conclusion.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Tape a right triangle on the floor, measure both legs, calculate the hypotenuse, then measure it to check the result.

  2. Ask students to explain why the longest side must be tested as c when deciding whether three lengths form a right triangle.

  3. Run a card sort matching context problems, labeled diagrams, equations, and solutions for missing sides or right-triangle checks.

  4. Have students calculate whether a proposed wheelchair ramp length fits a given rise and horizontal distance, then justify whether the design works.
