The Standard
Apply the Pythagorean Theorem, and its converse, to solve problems involving right triangles in context.
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will apply the Pythagorean Theorem to solve problems involving right triangles, including those in context.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students represent real situations with right triangles and find missing side lengths. They also test three given lengths to decide whether they form a right triangle.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose the correct side as the hypotenuse, set up an equation, and solve accurately. They use the converse to classify a triangle and explain their conclusion in context.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use a leg as c instead of identifying the side opposite the right angle. They may add side lengths instead of their squares. Some assume any three side lengths form a right triangle without checking whether a² + b² = c².
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “A 10-foot ladder stands 6 feet from a wall. How high does it reach, and do lengths 6, 8, and 11 form a right triangle?” Require equations, units, and a written conclusion.

Ways to Teach It
Tape a right triangle on the floor, measure both legs, calculate the hypotenuse, then measure it to check the result.
Ask students to explain why the longest side must be tested as c when deciding whether three lengths form a right triangle.
Run a card sort matching context problems, labeled diagrams, equations, and solutions for missing sides or right-triangle checks.
Have students calculate whether a proposed wheelchair ramp length fits a given rise and horizontal distance, then justify whether the design works.
