What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students measure the three sides of right triangles and construct a square on each side. They compare the square areas to confirm the relationship among the side lengths.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly identify the legs and hypotenuse. They use measurements, diagrams, or square tiles to show that the two smaller square areas equal the largest square area.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose any side as c instead of the hypotenuse opposite the right angle. They may add side lengths rather than squared lengths, or expect measured values to match exactly despite rounding.

How to Assess It

Give students a measured right triangle with sides 6 cm, 8 cm, and 10 cm. Ask them to calculate each square area and explain whether the measurements support the relationship.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build squares on the sides of a right triangle, then use unit tiles to compare the three areas.

  2. Show two right triangle diagrams and ask, "How do the square areas prove the side relationship?"

  3. Play a matching game pairing right triangles with cards showing their three squared side lengths.

  4. Measure a rectangular classroom corner diagonally, then compare the squared width and length with the squared diagonal.
