What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students measure the three sides of right triangles and construct a square on each side. They compare the square areas to confirm the relationship among the side lengths.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly identify the legs and hypotenuse. They use measurements, diagrams, or square tiles to show that the two smaller square areas equal the largest square area.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose any side as c instead of the hypotenuse opposite the right angle. They may add side lengths rather than squared lengths, or expect measured values to match exactly despite rounding.
How to Assess It
- Give students a measured right triangle with sides 6 cm, 8 cm, and 10 cm. Ask them to calculate each square area and explain whether the measurements support the relationship.

Ways to Teach It
Build squares on the sides of a right triangle, then use unit tiles to compare the three areas.
Show two right triangle diagrams and ask, "How do the square areas prove the side relationship?"
Play a matching game pairing right triangles with cards showing their three squared side lengths.
Measure a rectangular classroom corner diagonally, then compare the squared width and length with the squared diagonal.
