Virginia SOL 5.MG.2.a
The Standard
Investigate and develop a formula for determining the area of a right triangle.
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will use multiple representations to solve problems, including those in context, involving perimeter, area, and volume.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use rectangles to see why a right triangle has half the area of a related rectangle. They identify perpendicular base and height measurements and build the formula A = 1/2 × b × h.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify the two perpendicular sides as the base and height. They use A = 1/2 × b × h and explain that two matching right triangles form a rectangle.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may forget to divide the rectangle’s area by two. They may use a slanted side as the height, add the dimensions, or confuse area with perimeter.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A right triangle has perpendicular sides of 8 cm and 5 cm. Find its area and explain why your calculation includes one-half.

Ways to Teach It
Cut paper rectangles along a diagonal, match the two triangles, and label the base, height, rectangle area, and triangle area.
Ask students to write why a right triangle with base 6 units and height 4 units has half the area of its rectangle.
Play a card match using right triangle diagrams, base-height pairs, area expressions, and calculated areas.
Plan grass seed for a right triangular garden, using its perpendicular side lengths and the coverage listed on a seed bag.
