Virginia SOL 6.PS.1.f

Math6th GradeProbability and Statistics

The Standard

Compare data represented in a circle graph with the same data represented in other graphs, including but not limited to bar graphs, pictographs, and line plots (dot plots), and justify which graphical representation best represents the data.

Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will apply the data cycle (formulate questions; collect or acquire data; organize and represent data; and analyze data and communicate results) with a focus on circle graphs.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read the same data shown in several graph types and compare what each display makes easy to see. They choose the best graph for a stated purpose and justify that choice with evidence.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student matches categories, values, and totals across different displays. The student chooses a graph based on the question being asked and supports the choice with specific values or visual features.

Common Misconceptions

Students may compare slice sizes without converting percentages to counts or checking the total. They may assume circle graphs are always best for categorical data, even when exact differences matter. They may use a dot plot for categories or overlook a graph's scale or key.

How to Assess It

Show 24 survey responses, 9, 7, 5, and 3, in a circle graph, bar graph, and pictograph. Ask, "Which graph best shows the two closest categories, and what values support your choice?"

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups 24 linking cubes in four colors, then have them build a bar graph, arrange circle sectors, and compare what stands out.

  2. Post circle and bar graphs of snack choices, then ask students to write which better answers, "Which choices are closest?"

  3. Run a Graph Match relay where teams pair data tables with circle graphs, bar graphs, pictographs, or dot plots, then defend one match.

  4. Use a cafeteria waste survey to decide whether a circle graph or bar graph better explains where most discarded food comes from.
