Virginia SOL 6.PFA.3.a
The Standard
Identify and develop examples of the following algebraic vocabulary: equation, variable, expression, term, and coefficient.
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will write and solve one-step linear equations in one variable, including contextual problems that require the solution of a one-step linear equation in one variable.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify variables, coefficients, and terms in algebraic examples. They tell expressions from equations and create their own correct examples of each.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly label each part of an algebraic example and explain the role it plays. They create an expression and an equation, then point out how the two differ.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call any string of symbols an equation, even when it has no equal sign. They may confuse a term with a coefficient or overlook an unwritten coefficient of 1.
How to Assess It
- Give students 7x + 4 = 25. Ask them to circle the variable, box the coefficient, underline each term, and explain why it is an equation.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs colored cards with numbers, variables, operation signs, and equal signs to build and label expressions and equations.
Ask students to compare 3x + 5 and 3x + 5 = 20, then write one sentence explaining the difference.
Play vocabulary bingo by calling definitions while students cover matching algebraic examples on their boards.
Write c + 8 = 20 for a shopping total, then have students identify and explain each algebraic part.
