Virginia SOL 8.PFA.1.b
The Standard
Simplify and generate equivalent algebraic expressions in one variable by applying the order of operations and properties of real numbers. Expressions may need to be expanded (using the distributive property) or require combining like terms to simplify. Expressions will include only linear and numeric terms. Coefficients and numeric terms may be rational.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students rewrite linear expressions in one variable without changing their value. They follow the order of operations, distribute rational coefficients, and combine like terms.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can simplify -3/4(8x - 4) + 2x - 5 to -4x - 2 and justify each move. They can create another equivalent form and check it by substituting a value for x.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often combine 3x + 4 as 7x or combine variable terms with constants. They may distribute a negative or fraction to only the first term inside parentheses. Sign errors and weak fraction arithmetic can produce expressions that are not equivalent.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Simplify -3/4(8x - 4) + 2x - 5. Show each step and name the property used.

Ways to Teach It
Use algebra tiles to model 2(x + 3) + 3x, then rearrange the tiles to show 5x + 6.
Compare two worked solutions to -3(2x - 5) + x, then write which steps preserve equivalence and why.
Play a card sort matching unsimplified expressions, simplified forms, and property cards, including fractions and negative coefficients.
Write and simplify two expressions for the cost of x movie tickets with a coupon and a fixed service fee.
