Virginia SOL 5.CE.3.e
The Standard
Solve single-step contextual problems involving division with decimals by applying strategies (e.g., estimation, modeling) and algorithms, including the standard algorithm.
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will estimate, represent, solve, and justify solutions to single-step and multistep problems, including those in context, using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with decimal numbers.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify when a situation calls for division, estimate the result, and find the quotient using a model or written method. They interpret the answer in context and use the estimate to check that it makes sense.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can solve a problem such as sharing 18.75 liters equally among 5 containers and label the quotient in liters. The student uses an estimate or model to check the decimal placement and explains the calculation clearly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may place the decimal point in the quotient incorrectly or apply addition rules by lining up decimal points. They may choose the wrong operation or give a number without the correct unit. Some accept an unreasonable quotient without comparing it to an estimate.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Four friends share $27.60 equally. How much does each friend get? Estimate, solve, and explain why your answer is reasonable.”

Ways to Teach It
Use base-ten blocks or decimal grids to model 6.4 divided equally among 4 groups, then connect the model to written division.
Ask students to explain whether $7.50 shared among 3 people should give each person more or less than $3.
Play Estimate, Solve, Check with decimal division cards, awarding one point for a reasonable estimate and one for an accurate quotient.
Compare grocery unit prices by dividing each package price by its number of ounces, then identify the better buy.
