Virginia SOL 5.CE.3.a

Math5th GradeComputation and Estimation

The Standard

Apply estimation strategies (e.g., rounding to the nearest whole number, tenth or hundredth; compatible numbers, place value) to determine a reasonable solution for single-step and multistep contextual problems involving addition, subtraction, and multiplication of decimals, and single-step contextual problems involving division of decimals.

Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will estimate, represent, solve, and justify solutions to single-step and multistep problems, including those in context, using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with decimal numbers.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students estimate answers to decimal word problems before or after calculating. They select rounding, compatible numbers, or place-value reasoning and explain why the result is reasonable.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose a useful strategy, such as rounding or compatible numbers, and calculate an estimate accurately. They explain why the estimate fits the context and use it to check an exact answer.

Common Misconceptions

Students may give an exact answer when an estimate is requested. They may round every number the same way, even when compatible numbers would make the work easier. Some round too early in a multistep problem and produce an estimate that is not useful.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: A class buys 6 notebooks at $2.79 each and markers for $4.65. Estimate the total cost and name the strategy you used.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs grocery ads and a $30 budget, then have them estimate which combinations of items they can afford.

  2. Ask, "When is rounding to whole numbers too rough?" Students compare estimates for the same decimal problem and defend the most useful one.

  3. Play Estimate Match with cards showing decimal problems, possible estimates, and strategy names for students to pair correctly.

  4. Have students estimate a restaurant bill for several meals, then compare their estimate with the calculator total.
