What Students Need to Do
- Students build, draw, and write four-digit numbers using thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones. They regroup place-value units to show the same number in several different ways.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can build or draw a four-digit number and label the value of each part. The student can regroup it in several valid ways and show that each decomposition has the same total.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse a digit's place with its value, such as calling the 4 in 4,231 simply 4. They may also think regrouping changes the total or overlook zero as a placeholder.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Represent 4,306 on a labeled place-value chart, then write two decompositions, including one that uses no thousands.
