Math3rd GradeNumber and Number Sense

The Standard

Compose, decompose, and represent numbers up to 9,999 in multiple ways, according to place value (e.g., 256 can be 1 hundred, 14 tens, 16 ones, but also 25 tens, 6 ones), with and without models.

Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will use place value understanding to read, write, and determine the place and value of each digit in a whole number, up to six digits, with and without models.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students build, draw, and write four-digit numbers using thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones. They regroup place-value units to show the same number in several different ways.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can build or draw a four-digit number and label the value of each part. The student can regroup it in several valid ways and show that each decomposition has the same total.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse a digit's place with its value, such as calling the 4 in 4,231 simply 4. They may also think regrouping changes the total or overlook zero as a placeholder.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Represent 4,306 on a labeled place-value chart, then write two decompositions, including one that uses no thousands.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build 2,437 with base-ten blocks, then trade one thousand for ten hundreds and record both decompositions.

  2. Write and defend two ways to decompose 3,620, including a way that uses more than 20 tens.

  3. Play Trade It: draw a number card, roll a place-value die, make one valid trade, and record the new decomposition.

  4. A warehouse packs 2,460 pencils in cases of 1,000, boxes of 100, and bundles of 10; find three packing plans.
