Virginia SOL 3.NS.1.b

Math3rd GradeNumber and Number Sense

The Standard

Apply patterns within the base 10 system to determine and communicate, orally and in written form, the place and value of each digit in a six-digit whole number (e.g., in 165,724, the 5 represents 5 thousands and its value is 5,000).

Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will use place value understanding to read, write, and determine the place and value of each digit in a whole number, up to six digits, with and without models.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students connect each digit’s position to its value in numbers through the hundred-thousands place. They state and write each digit’s place and value using base-ten patterns.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a six-digit number, students can name the place and value of every digit without a model. They can explain that moving one place left makes a digit worth ten times as much.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name the digit instead of its value, saying 7 rather than 70,000. They may count places from the left or confuse thousands, ten-thousands, and hundred-thousands.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: For 483,216, make a table showing every digit, its place, and its value. Circle one digit and explain how its value would change one place left.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build numbers with place-value disks, then label each digit’s place and value on a chart.

  2. Ask, “How does a digit’s value change when it moves one place left?” Students explain with an example.

  3. Play Digit Detective: reveal a six-digit number and award points for correctly naming a chosen digit’s place and value.

  4. Use population figures from nearby towns; students choose one digit in each number and state what it represents.
