What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read decimals through thousandths and identify where each digit is located. They state and write each digit's value, using words, decimals, or expanded form.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given 6.407, a student identifies 4 as four tenths, 0 as zero hundredths, and 7 as seven thousandths. The student records each value correctly and uses expanded form to explain the answer.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name the digit instead of its value, saying the 8 in 0.385 has a value of 8. They may ignore zero placeholders or think digits farther right have greater values.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: For 3.052, name the place and value of the digits 5 and 2, then write the number in expanded form.

Ways to Teach It
Have students build 2.306 with digit cards on a place-value mat, then label the value of each digit.
Ask students to explain orally and in writing why the 5s in 0.505 have different values.
Play a matching game using cards that show decimals, selected digits, place names, and digit values.
Show a gas price of $3.459 and have students identify the place and value of each digit after the decimal.
