What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read decimals through thousandths and identify where each digit is located. They state and write each digit's value, using words, decimals, or expanded form.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given 6.407, a student identifies 4 as four tenths, 0 as zero hundredths, and 7 as seven thousandths. The student records each value correctly and uses expanded form to explain the answer.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name the digit instead of its value, saying the 8 in 0.385 has a value of 8. They may ignore zero placeholders or think digits farther right have greater values.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: For 3.052, name the place and value of the digits 5 and 2, then write the number in expanded form.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have students build 2.306 with digit cards on a place-value mat, then label the value of each digit.

  2. Ask students to explain orally and in writing why the 5s in 0.505 have different values.

  3. Play a matching game using cards that show decimals, selected digits, place names, and digit values.

  4. Show a gas price of $3.459 and have students identify the place and value of each digit after the decimal.
