What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect decimals through thousandths to models, place-value charts, number forms, and words. They read a decimal aloud and write the matching standard and word forms.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students read 0.406 as four hundred six thousandths and write it correctly from spoken or written words. They match decimals through thousandths to base-ten blocks, shaded grids, and place-value charts.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may read 0.45 as “zero point forty-five” without connecting it to forty-five hundredths. They may think more digits means a greater value or confuse tenths, hundredths, and thousandths when writing numbers.
How to Assess It
- Show a model representing 0.307. Ask students to write the decimal in standard form and words, then label the value of each digit.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs base-ten blocks and a place-value mat, then call decimals for students to build and record in standard and word form.
Ask students to explain in writing how 0.305 differs from 0.35, using tenths, hundredths, and thousandths in their explanation.
Play decimal match with cards showing models, standard form, and word form, with students collecting sets of three matching representations.
Use race times such as 12.438 seconds, and have students read each time aloud and write it in words.
