Virginia SOL 3.MG.2.a.ii

Math3rd GradeMeasurement and Geometry

The Standard

estimate and determine the area of a given surface by counting the number of square units, describe the measurement (using the number and unit) and justify the measurement.

Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will use multiple representations to estimate and solve problems, including those in context, involving area and perimeter (in both U.S. Customary and metric units).

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students estimate how many equal square units will cover a surface. They count the units without gaps or overlaps, state the area with square units, and explain their method.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student makes a reasonable estimate, then finds the exact area by counting equal square units. The student uses a correct unit, such as square centimeters, and explains how the squares cover the surface.

Common Misconceptions

Students may count grid lines, corners, or outside edges instead of square units. They may leave gaps, overlap units, confuse area with perimeter, or write inches instead of square inches.

How to Assess It

Give students a rectangle made of 4 rows of 6 squares. Ask them to estimate its area, find the exact area, label it, and explain their count.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Cover a folder with one-inch paper squares, estimate first, count the squares, and record the area in square inches.

  2. Ask, “How do counting every square and counting rows prove the same area?”

  3. Play Area Match: students pair tiled-shape cards with area cards, then explain each match using rows, columns, or individual squares.

  4. Use a gridded patio plan to estimate and calculate how many one-square-foot tiles are needed, then label the area in square feet.
