Virginia SOL 3.MG.2.a.i
The Standard
describe and give examples of area as a measurement in contextual situations
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will use multiple representations to estimate and solve problems, including those in context, involving area and perimeter (in both U.S. Customary and metric units).

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students recognize area as the amount of flat surface covered. They estimate or calculate that space with equal square units and explain what the answer means in context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify which situations involve covering a surface. They find area by counting equal square units or using rows and columns, then label answers with square units.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse area with perimeter and add side lengths instead of counting surface space. They may leave gaps, overlap units, or report units instead of square units.
How to Assess It
- Give students a 4-by-6 grid labeled as a garden. Ask, “How much ground does the garden cover, and what unit should you use?”

Ways to Teach It
Cover a folder with square tiles, count the tiles, and explain why gaps or overlaps would make the measurement inaccurate.
Ask students to write about whether painting a wall uses area or perimeter and support their answer with a labeled sketch.
Play Area Match by pairing grid rectangles with area cards, multiplication equations, and matching square-unit labels.
Plan a small garden on grid paper, then calculate how many square feet of soil or sod would cover it.
