What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students find the repeating unit or addition rule in a pattern. They show the same pattern with different materials, pictures, or numbers and explain how the parts match.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can change an AAB color pattern into an AAB sound or shape pattern. The student can also show 2, 4, 6 with objects and explain that each step adds two.

Common Misconceptions

Students may copy the colors or objects without preserving the repeating unit or growth rule. They may extend a pattern instead of showing it in a new form, or change the amount added between steps.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Show red, blue, blue, red, blue, blue with letters, then draw 2, 4, 6 as groups of dots. Explain how each new pattern matches the given one.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build red-blue-blue with cubes, transfer it to circle-square-square cards, and explain how the positions match.

  2. Compare dot groups of 3, 5, and 7 with the number pattern, then write what changes and what stays the same.

  3. Play Pattern Translator: draw a pattern card, rebuild it using a different material, and earn a point for explaining the match.

  4. Photograph a classroom border, redraw its repeating pattern with letters, and mark the part that repeats.
