Virginia SOL 2.PFA.1.b
The Standard
Analyze a repeating or increasing pattern and generalize the change to extend the pattern using objects, pictures, and numbers.
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will describe, extend, create, and transfer repeating and increasing patterns (limited to addition of whole numbers) using various representations.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find the part that repeats or the amount added each time. They use that rule to continue the pattern with objects, pictures, or numbers.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student names the repeating unit or states the amount added each time, then gives several correct next terms. The student can build or draw the same pattern and explain how each version follows one rule.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may focus only on color or size and miss the full repeating unit. In increasing patterns, they may add different amounts or copy the last term instead of using the same rule.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: complete ●▲●▲__, __ and 4, 7, 10, __, __. Under each pattern, write or draw the rule used.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs colored cubes to build red, blue, blue patterns, circle one full repeat, and add nine more cubes.
Display 2, 5, 8, 11 and ask, “What stays the same about each change, and what comes next?”
Play a card match where students pair rule cards with pattern cards, then earn the pair by extending the pattern twice.
Photograph or sketch a classroom border pattern, mark its repeating unit, and draw the next six pieces.
