What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students recognize coins, including quarters, and count mixed groups of coins and $1 bills. They make requested amounts up to $2 in different ways. They write totals as cents or dollars, such as 85¢ and $1.35.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can organize mixed money, count by each coin's value, and state the total. Given $1.62, the student can build it with coins and bills and write the amount correctly. The student can also show 25¢ in several ways.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count each coin as one or assume the largest coin has the greatest value. They often lose the total when changing from quarters to dimes, nickels, or pennies. They may write 1.5 for $1.05 or combine symbols, as in $85¢.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Use classroom coins and bills to show $1.40 in two ways, including a quarter, then write the amount with correct symbols.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs coin manipulatives and two $1 bills; call amounts under $2, and have students build each amount in two ways.
Ask students to draw three answers to “How can you make 25¢ without a quarter?” and explain which uses the fewest coins.
Play Money Match: students pair amount cards, such as 75¢ or $1.25, with matching coin and bill picture cards.
Set up a class snack shop with prices under $2; students choose an item, pay exactly, and record the amount correctly.
