What Students Need to Do
- Students divide length models into equal parts and identify how many parts are selected. They name and write fractions with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8. They connect the fraction to a simple situation involving a whole length.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students divide strips, bars, rods, and number lines into the requested number of equal parts. They accurately label a selected amount with a fraction symbol and fraction name. They explain that the denominator counts all equal parts and the numerator counts selected parts.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may make the correct number of parts but draw parts of different sizes. They may count dividing lines instead of equal sections. They may also reverse the numerator and denominator or think eighths are larger than fourths.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “A ribbon has six equal sections. Color four sections, write the fraction, name it in words, and explain what each number means.”
