What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose millimeters, centimeters, or meters based on the object or distance. They estimate, measure with the correct tool, and use the result to solve a practical problem.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students select a sensible unit and tool, make a reasonable estimate, and measure accurately from zero. They solve the related problem, label the answer, and check that it makes sense.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose meters for small objects or millimeters for room lengths. They may start at the ruler’s edge instead of zero, or count marks rather than spaces. Some report an answer without a unit or treat an estimate as exact.

How to Assess It

Give each student a pencil. Ask: Choose a metric unit, estimate and measure its length, then find the end-to-end length of three identical pencils.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set up stations with a paper clip, book, desk, and doorway for students to estimate, choose tools, measure, and record lengths.

  2. Ask students to write which unit best fits a shoelace, ant, and hallway, then defend each choice with a partner.

  3. Play Measurement Match by pairing object cards with reasonable length cards labeled in millimeters, centimeters, or meters.

  4. Plan a classroom reading corner by measuring available wall space and deciding whether a one-meter shelf will fit.
