What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose a metric length unit that fits the size of an object or distance. They use the context to decide whether the measurement is very small, moderate, large, or very long.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students select a sensible unit for objects and distances of different sizes. They explain their choice by comparing the measurement with familiar benchmarks, such as a finger width or road distance.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose a unit because its name is familiar, not because it fits the distance. They may use centimeters for long travel distances or kilometers for small objects. Some confuse the unit choice with the actual measurement.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Choose the best unit for the thickness of a coin, length of a pencil, height of a door, and distance between towns. Explain one choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set up stations with a coin, book, classroom, and local map; students choose millimeters, centimeters, meters, or kilometers and justify each.

  2. Ask: Which unit would you use for an ant, a notebook, a soccer field, and a road trip, and why?

  3. Play Unit Sort: teams place context cards under four unit labels, then earn a point for each sound explanation.

  4. Give students a school map and town map; they label likely units for doorway widths, hallways, and routes between landmarks.
