Virginia SOL 3.NS.3.a.ii
The Standard
length models (e.g., paper fraction strips, fraction bars, rods, number lines)
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will use mathematical reasoning and justification to represent and compare fractions (proper and improper) and mixed numbers with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10), including those in context.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students divide strips, bars, rods, or number lines into equal parts and use them to show a given amount. They name and write proper fractions, improper fractions, and mixed numbers from those models.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can partition a strip or number line into equal parts and locate fractions beyond one whole. They correctly label the model with a fraction and, when needed, an equivalent mixed number.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count tick marks instead of equal spaces on a number line. They may treat the numerator and denominator as separate whole numbers, or stop at one whole when modeling an improper fraction.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to draw a number line model for 7/4, label the point, and write the same amount as a mixed number.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs fraction strips and ask them to build 5/3, mark each whole, then write the matching mixed number.
Show 6/4 on a number line and ask, “How do you know where it belongs, and what mixed number names the same point?”
Play Fraction Match with cards showing symbols, mixed numbers, fraction strips, and number lines; students collect sets that show equal amounts.
Use a ruler marked in eighths to locate 11/8 inches, then record the measurement as both an improper fraction and a mixed number.
