What Students Need to Do
- Students quickly give sums and differences for number facts through 20 without counting one by one. They use known fact relationships to recall answers from memory.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given mixed equations such as 9 + 8, 14 - 6, and 20 - 7, the student answers accurately within a few seconds. The student recalls facts in varied order without fingers, counters, or recounting.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume subtraction is commutative and give the same answer for 14 - 6 and 6 - 14. Some know addition facts but do not connect them to related subtraction facts. Others still count every fact on fingers or confuse the operation signs when facts are mixed.
How to Assess It
- Show 12 mixed addition and subtraction fact cards within 20, one at a time, for three seconds each. Students write each answer while you note accuracy and visible counting.

Give pairs two-color counters and ten-frames to build related facts, then remove the materials and recall each fact from memory.
Ask students to write how knowing 8 + 7 helps them solve 15 - 8 without counting.
