What Students Need to Do
- Students quickly give sums and differences for basic facts with answers through 10. They use known facts and number patterns instead of counting every object or finger.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students answer mixed facts accurately and without counting one by one. They can quickly give answers for facts such as 6 + 4, 9 - 3, and 5 + 2.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse the plus and minus signs or subtract in the wrong order. Some still count every object or finger instead of recalling known facts. They may not recognize that related addition and subtraction facts use the same three numbers.
How to Assess It
- Show these facts one at a time: 7 + 3, 9 - 5, 4 + 4, 10 - 7, 6 + 3, and 8 - 2. Note whether each student answers accurately without counting.

Give pairs counters and ten-frames to build fact families, then cover the counters and recall each answer.
