Virginia SOL 1.MG.2.a

Math1st GradeMeasurement and Geometry

The Standard

Describe triangles, squares, and rectangles using the terms sides, vertices, and angles. Describe a circle using terms such as round and curved.

Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will describe, sort, draw, and name plane figures (circles, triangles, squares, and rectangles), and compose larger plane figures by combining simple plane figures.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students examine common plane figures and describe their defining parts with precise shape words. They count straight sides, vertices, and angles, and describe circles by their curved form.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students count and describe the sides, vertices, and angles of each polygon accurately. They describe a circle as round and curved, with no vertices or angles. They recognize figures even when the size or direction changes.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse sides with vertices or count the same vertex twice. They may call a rotated square a diamond or think triangles must point upward. Some may say a circle has angles or vertices.

How to Assess It

Show a triangle, square, rectangle, and circle on an exit ticket. Ask students to describe each figure using sides, vertices, angles, round, or curved.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build triangles, squares, and rectangles with craft sticks, then place clay balls on each vertex and count the angles.

  2. Ask, “How are a square and rectangle alike and different?” Have students answer using sides, vertices, and angles.

  3. Play Shape Detective by giving attribute clues while students hold up the matching shape card.

  4. Hunt for shapes around the classroom, sketch four examples, and write one attribute beside each sketch.
