What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students look closely at a circle and tell what they notice about its edge. They use words such as round and curved to describe its shape.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student describes a circle as round and says its edge is curved. The student explains that it has no straight edges or corners.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call any shape with a curved edge a circle, including an oval or semicircle. They may say a circle has sides or corners, or describe only its size or color.
How to Assess It
- Show a paper circle and ask, “Tell me two words that describe the edge of this shape.”

Ways to Teach It
Have students trace jar lids, then run a finger along each tracing and describe how the edge feels and moves.
Show a circle and square, then ask partners, “How are their edges different?”
Play Shape Detective by giving clues such as “My edge is curved and I have no corners” before students choose a shape card.
Hunt for circular classroom objects, sketch one, and label its edge with the word round or curved.
