The Standard

Formulate questions that require the collection or acquisition of data with a focus on circle graphs.

Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will apply the data cycle (formulate questions; collect or acquire data; organize and represent data; and analyze data and communicate results) with a focus on circle graphs.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students write survey or research questions whose answers sort a whole group into nonoverlapping categories. They identify who or what will be studied and how the data will be gathered. They choose questions that produce parts of one whole.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can write a clear question with categories that cover one whole group. The student names the group, gives nonoverlapping response choices, and identifies a practical data source. They can explain why each response will fit into one section of a circle graph.

Common Misconceptions

Students may write questions with overlapping choices, such as selecting every sport they play. They may use measurements that do not form categories within one whole. Some forget to name the group being studied or allow an “other” category.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Write one question about our class that could produce a circle graph, list the response choices, and name how you would gather the data.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a bag of colored tiles, then have them write a question whose results could be shown as sections of one circle.

  2. Discuss: Could favorite school lunch be shown in a circle graph, and what response choices would make the results accurate?

  3. Play Circle Graph or Not by sorting question cards, then revise each unsuitable question so every answer fits one category.

  4. Use cafeteria sales data to write a question comparing each lunch choice as a share of all lunches sold that day.
