What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify and name circles, triangles, squares, and rectangles in objects and pictures. They recognize each shape even when it is turned or shown in an unusual position.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student correctly names circles, triangles, squares, and rectangles shown as objects or pictures. The student still recognizes each shape when it is turned, moved, enlarged, or reduced.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call a rotated square a diamond or think a triangle must point upward. They may identify shapes by size, color, or position instead of their defining features.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Show a circle, triangle, square, and rectangle in mixed orientations, then ask students to name each shape.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs foam shapes to rotate, sort, and label as circles, triangles, squares, or rectangles.
Show a rotated shape and ask, "What shape is it, and how do you know?"
Play Shape Cover-Up by revealing one part of a hidden shape at a time while students guess and explain.
Take a classroom shape hunt and record objects that look like circles, triangles, squares, and rectangles.
