Virginia SOL K.MG.2.d
The Standard
Distinguish between examples and nonexamples of identified plane figures (circles, triangles, squares, and rectangles).
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will identify, describe, name, compare, and construct plane figures (circles, triangles, squares, and rectangles).

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide whether a drawing or object belongs to a named shape group. They use straight or curved edges, number of sides, and corners, not color, size, or position.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately sort familiar and unusual examples of circles, triangles, squares, and rectangles. They explain each choice by naming sides, corners, or curved edges.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a square stops being a square when it is turned and call it a diamond. They may accept open shapes or shapes with curved sides based only on overall appearance.
How to Assess It
- Show eight drawings and say, “Circle every triangle, cross out each nonexample, and explain one choice using sides or corners.”

Ways to Teach It
Give students craft sticks, yarn loops, and shape cards; they build each named figure, then fix one model that is a nonexample.
Display a tilted square beside an open four-sided drawing and ask, “Which is a square, and what proves it?”
Play Shape Detective: reveal one attribute at a time, and students hold up the matching circle, triangle, square, or rectangle card.
Take a classroom shape hunt, photograph one example and one nonexample of a chosen figure, then explain each choice.
