What Students Need to Do: Students identify how rebuilding changed Virginia’s economy, government, schools, and daily life. They explain how freedom, voting, public schools, the Freedmen’s Bureau, and sharecropping affected Virginians.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students connect Reconstruction policies and systems to clear results. They can explain who gained rights, who received aid, and why many families remained poor or in debt.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think the end of slavery brought immediate equality and financial security. They may also confuse sharecropping with land ownership or assume the Freedmen’s Bureau helped only formerly enslaved people.
How to Assess It: Give students this exit prompt: “Name two Reconstruction changes in Virginia and explain one effect each had on people’s lives.”
