The student will apply history and social science skills to understand the role Virginians played in American history during World War I and World War II by a. examining how key leaders and citizens prepared for wartime; and b. describing the contributions made by military veterans and Medal of Honor recipients.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use photographs, maps, ration books, and short biographies to explain how Virginians prepared for both world wars. They describe the service of veterans and Medal of Honor recipients such as Desmond Doss.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly connect Woodrow Wilson with World War I and George C. Marshall with World War II. They explain how civilian work, military leadership, or individual bravery supported the nation during wartime.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may mix up the two wars or assume only soldiers helped the war effort. They may think the Medal of Honor is given to everyone who serves, rather than for extraordinary bravery.
How to Assess It
- Give students four names or images: Wilson, Marshall, a shipyard worker, and Doss. Ask them to label the war and write one sentence explaining each contribution.
