What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare how daily work, rights, limits, and opportunities differed across colonial groups. They use evidence to explain how occupation, wealth, race, gender, and legal status shaped each person’s viewpoint.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a short source or scenario, students identify the viewpoint and cite details about work, power, or freedom. They compare two groups by naming a meaningful similarity and difference.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may picture every white colonist as wealthy and every Black colonist as enslaved. They may treat indentured service as identical to lifelong hereditary slavery. They may also overlook women’s labor or assume everyone within a group had the same experience.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Compare a large landowner and an indentured servant, naming one difference in daily life and explaining how it could shape each viewpoint.
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Give pairs role cards and picture cards of tools, homes, food, and documents, then build and explain each person’s daily schedule.
Ask, “Who had the most control over daily life in a colonial town, and what evidence supports your claim?”
Play a perspective match game where students pair work, rights, and restrictions cards with role cards, then defend one disputed match.
Compare a colonial job notice with a current job posting, noting who could apply, expected work, pay, and legal protections.
