What Students Need to Do: Students identify who is speaking, what that person believes, and what may shape the belief. They explain similarities and differences between viewpoints using evidence from sources.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can compare two accounts and cite details that show agreement or disagreement. The student can connect each viewpoint to a person’s role, culture, interests, or political goals.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat a perspective as a random opinion instead of a view shaped by experience and interests. They may label one account correct without checking evidence. They may also list facts without explaining how the viewpoints differ.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: “A merchant opposes a tax because sales may fall. A lawmaker supports it to fund defense.” Explain one difference and what shapes each view.

Lesson moves

Give groups role cards from a colonial tax dispute, then have students sort statement cards by speaker and justify each match.
Ask students to write how a Patriot and a Loyalist might describe the same protest differently, using one reason for each view.
Play Perspective Match by pairing source excerpts with speaker cards, then award points for evidence that supports each match.
Present a school lunch change and compare responses from a student, parent, cafeteria manager, and principal.
