What Students Need to Do: Students identify meaningful similarities and differences between two people, places, or events. They organize facts by shared features and distinct features, then support each comparison with evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students choose a clear basis for comparison, such as leadership, location, cause, or result. They state accurate similarities and differences using details from maps, readings, or sources.
Common Misconceptions: Students may list separate facts without directly connecting them. They may confuse a similarity with a difference, compare unrelated features, or use opinions instead of evidence.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Name two people, places, or events studied this week. Write one similarity and one difference, with a supporting fact for each.

Lesson moves

Sort fact cards about Jamestown and Williamsburg onto a floor Venn diagram labeled first place, both, and second place.
After reading two short biographies, write which person had the greater effect on Virginia and support the claim with two comparisons.
Play Same, Different, or Both by showing paired event facts and having teams hold up the matching response card.
Compare a historical map of the local area with a current map, then list two changes and one feature that remained.
