What Students Need to Do: Students examine how different groups understood the same event or issue. They identify similarities, differences, and reasons behind each viewpoint.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students compare two or more viewpoints using accurate evidence. They explain how people’s background, interests, time, and place shaped their views.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat one viewpoint as the full story or judge past people only by current values. They may list views without directly comparing them or supporting claims with evidence.
How to Assess It: Give students two short source excerpts about the same event. Ask them to name one similarity, one difference, and one reason for the difference.

Lesson moves

Give groups source cards from one event, then have them sort the cards by viewpoint and label the evidence behind each choice.
Ask students to write which speaker would support a proposed policy and explain why using two details from the sources.
Play Viewpoint Match, where teams pair anonymous statements with historical groups and earn points by defending each match with evidence.
Compare reactions to a local development proposal from residents, business owners, officials, and environmental groups using short news excerpts.
