What Students Need to Do: Students identify and label all 50 states on a map. They also place Alaska and Hawaii correctly in relation to the rest of the country.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can locate any named state on an unlabeled map. They distinguish states with similar names and identify neighboring states accurately.
Common Misconceptions: Students often confuse Washington with Washington, D.C., or mix up states with similar names, such as Virginia and West Virginia. Map insets can make Alaska and Hawaii seem close to the mainland.
How to Assess It: Give students a numbered blank map and ask them to name 10 selected states, including Alaska and Hawaii. Change the selected states each time.

Lesson moves

Have pairs assemble a blank state puzzle, then label each piece before placing it.
Ask students to write directions from one state to another using neighboring states and regions.
Play State Map Bingo by calling state names while students cover their locations on blank maps.
Plan a five-stop road trip and mark each state visited on a map.
