What Students Need to Do: Students read maps, graphs, and location data to spot clusters, routes, and changes over time. They use physical and human factors to explain patterns and make evidence-based predictions.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students identify a clear spatial pattern and support it with map or data evidence. They predict where people or events may move next and explain why.
Common Misconceptions: Students may assume movement follows the shortest route or has only one cause. They may ignore map scale, time periods, political borders, transportation networks, or physical barriers.
How to Assess It: Give students a map showing population growth, highways, rivers, and three cities. Ask them to predict which city will grow fastest and cite two map details.

Lesson moves

Use string, pins, and a wall map to model migration routes, then add mountains, borders, and roads to revise each route.
Ask students to write: Where would a new settlement likely grow, and which three geographic clues support your claim?
Play Pattern Detective with map cards, awarding points for identifying a pattern, naming evidence, and making a reasonable prediction.
Compare local housing growth with a road map and recent census data, then predict where the next neighborhood may be built.
