What Students Need to Do: Students read maps, graphs, tables, and timelines to spot clusters, movement, and change over time. They use specific evidence to explain what they notice and suggest geographic reasons.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given maps from two dates, students can describe what changed, where it changed, and how they know. They can distinguish a repeated spatial pattern from a trend over time.
Common Misconceptions: Students may list locations without explaining how they relate, or call one data point a trend. They may ignore the legend, scale, or date and assume two related facts prove cause.
How to Assess It: Display U.S. population density maps from 1800 and 1860. Ask students to identify one change and support it with two details from the maps.

Lesson moves

Students place settlement dots on outline maps from two dates, then circle clusters and draw arrows to show movement.
Ask students to write: Where did settlement grow, what geographic feature may explain it, and what evidence supports your claim?
Play Map Evidence Match, where teams pair trend statements with the map detail that best supports each statement.
Give students local population totals from three census years and have them graph the data and describe the trend.
