What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify ways people can support political campaigns, such as canvassing, phone banking, and distributing information. They also explain peaceful ways to seek government action, including petitions, letters, public comments, and meetings with officials.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can select a suitable method for a community problem and explain whom it should target. They can distinguish helping a candidate from asking current officials to change a policy.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think only adults can participate in campaigns or contact officials. They may also confuse a petition with any protest, or assume collecting signatures automatically changes a law.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: A town needs a safer crosswalk. Name one campaign action and one peaceful petition method that could help, then explain each choice.
