What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify the Board of Governors, 12 regional Federal Reserve Banks, and member banks. They explain how the Fed manages the money supply, supervises banks, and provides banking services.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can label a simple diagram of the Federal Reserve System and describe each part’s role. They can explain how Fed decisions affect interest rates, borrowing, spending, and inflation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think the Federal Reserve is a regular bank where people open accounts or a branch controlled directly by the president. They may also confuse monetary policy with government taxing and spending.
How to Assess It
- Give students a diagram with the Board of Governors, regional banks, and member banks, then ask them to label each part and explain one Fed action.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups role cards for the Board of Governors, regional banks, and member banks, then build a human model showing how information and services move.
Ask students to write: Why might the Federal Reserve raise interest rates when prices are rising too quickly?
Play a scenario card game where teams choose whether to raise, lower, or hold interest rates and defend each choice.
Compare two car loan payments with different interest rates, then discuss how Federal Reserve decisions can affect household borrowing.
