What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how government-issued money gives people a commonly accepted way to pay. They compare a money economy with barter and identify money as a medium of exchange, measure of value, and store of value.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can explain why currency makes trade easier than swapping goods directly. They can use examples to show how money sets prices, completes purchases, and saves value for later.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think money has value because paper bills or coins are valuable materials. They may also think barter works as efficiently as money or that money only means cash.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A baker wants shoes, but the shoemaker does not want bread. Explain how government currency solves the problem and name two purposes money serves.
