What Students Need to Do: Students explain that people may choose their religious beliefs and practices, change them, or choose none. They identify situations where that choice is respected or denied.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can explain why no one should be forced to follow a religion. The student can describe respectful responses to different beliefs and practices.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think everyone must belong to a religion. They may think religious choice allows someone to make others follow the same beliefs. Some confuse respecting a belief with agreeing with it.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: "Maya celebrates a religious holiday, but Leo does not. Should either child be forced to copy the other? Explain why."

Lesson moves

Sort picture cards showing worship, religious celebrations, and choosing not to participate, then label each as a personal choice.
Discuss: "How can classmates respect people who practice different religions or no religion?" Record two respectful actions.
Play Rights Detective by reading scenario cards while students hold up "respected" or "not respected" cards and explain their choices.
Use a town map to identify different houses of worship, then discuss why people may attend one, another, or none.
